Installing Windshield Trim
 

We're getting ready to paint our 86 944 NA project car. One of the last things I did was remove the windshield trim and dig out most of the goo from around the windshield. to repair some minor rust and peeling paint along the roof edge and A pillars. There seemed (note past tense) to be some type of plastic and very thin metal trim around the windshield that the rubber trim slipped into. It was pretty beat up, cracked and peeling. Has anyone had any experience replacing this stuff without removing the windshield .... OR.... Is my plan to simply fill up the gap with butyl rubber caulk and glue the rubber seal into place "adequate". I know its not the factory way but I'm sinking more time and money into this car than originally planned and am trying to maintain a low budget.

I've been watching your progress and compliment you. You do need to document the task with pictures for us. I mean the repair, clutch, sewing seat covers, headliner and now painting.

Thank you for your kind words and I'll follow the link you provided to see if there is any relevant info. Regarding photos, I wish I had started taking them from the beginning. The car is currently in a combo of primer on the repaired body sections and wetsanded old MAACO acrylic enamel red everywhere else. I will post photos when finished. As soon as I get a couple of 65 degree days we'll be painting.

Although we only paid $500 for the car initially, we've got about $1600 total in it now with, I hope, very little left. It turns out there were more problems than originally anticipated. This weekend is pull, rebuild, and replace the power steering pump, and do the oil in the intake test I recently read about for cracked headers. I can hear some kind of exhaust leak but haven't been able to find the source.

We've been working slowly but steady since June. I don't expect to achieve Porsche factory perfection or concourse quality, but we're hoping for a great looking, cool, and reliable ride for my son 1st car. I'm trying to teach him the value of hard work and instill some pride of ownership, rather that just simply handing him a vehicle to abuse.

Doesn't anyone have some experience with this?
