I have thought about switching myself, I guess mostly just because it looks cool. Are there any pros or cons to an aftermarket? What about the breather tube going to the front cover? Is there a place on the adapter plate for this?
thanks dennis |

You can get the adapter plates on eBay for around 10-15 shipped. With a filter around 20-25 shipped. The adapter plate I put on mine did not fit perfectly, luckly I had access to some .020 sheetmetal. I did not want to take a chance of any possilbe leaks. Makes the car sound alot more aggresive! Worth the change.

dewatts, Porsche recommends capping the tube at the cover, with or without the cone filter
pro- addds more room to engine bay, looks cool, reduces chance of hydrolock looks cool! con- possible increased heat intake and reduced "ram air" effect

Careful with those ebay plates, some are just way too big for a AFM. A friend got one and installed it at my hose and the diameter or the plate hole was about .5" too large. Also, in order to do this right you need some sort of mount to hold the filter off the alternator which will melt it. I think vertex auto sells a kit called vtx or something like that. A cone filler is still kind of a risky idea but it does open up a lot of space under the hood.

i let mine sit on the alternator for a year and there was no 'burning'...
granted, i would have prefered it have a mount of some sort.... but I didn't experience anything bad...

How do you connect this Wanted to add a pic of my filter, hope this helps, real easy set up. I RTVd a couple pieces of small fuel hose on the Alternator, so it would not sit directly on that. Mike

Hello all,
I see that some others besides my self who have added a filter to the crankcase breather tube. Normally the Crankcase breather tube goes back into the air cleaner intake for smog purposes. This is compression gasses and other stuff out of the Crankcase - To me it's good to have a functioning Crankcase breather and being able to eliminate the build up of pressures from there. Another thing to look for is the Mounting Bracket sold on eBay and from several others as this allows a more solid mount of the AFM - Sometimes if the AFM is bouncing around there it can be become disfunctional, and start to give bad readings during operation. Goods & Bads - 1.)Many say the After Market Air Filter Systems look much better. 2.) Many are freeier breathing than OEM 3.)All aftermarket breather systems are subject to hot air from the engine bay thus reducing HP slightly - If one could get only the cooler air from the fender opening like the OEM air system that would be the optimum. 4.)Most will not pass smog inspections unless the Crankcase Breather is plugged or routed into the intake pre filter.

That is not a crankcase breather connection in the above picture. That is the timing belt clamshell enclosure vent line. The crankcase is vented between the top of the oil/air separator (the thing the 710 cap screws to) and the side of the air intake J-boot, where it connects to the throttle body.
