converting steering rack

Does anybody know if it's possible to convert a powersteering rack to non power steering?

i think i once read on this board, that somebody with a defective pump , drained the hydraulic fluid, and drove that way...

are there any drawbacks to this, other then the obvious lack of power steering???

i'm converting my 944S to rally car, wanna ditch dead weight and possible things that can break... but it's difficult to source tie rods off correct length , since all 88's had wider track and powersteering, so none of the non powersteering configurations work, since those were pre 87...

Most of the guys running 944 Spec cars just loop the in/outputs of the PS lines, and top the racks off with fluid. A few have packed the racks with grease. Works great on our cars - lightweight, and with only 225 width tires.

oooh
so it's reliable that way? safe?

't would save me a lot of trouble converting the thing

I'd like to know more info on your rally conversion and 944 rally cars in general.

944 rally cars... none that i know off, at least not historically at the time they were new.. i'm sure somebody allready has done the conversion, i can't think that i'm the big pioneer in this

it was mostly 924's, and 925 CGT GTR's

i'm just taking my 944S, and i'm gutting it.. ditching everything that can be ditched, ABS, cat, power steering, AC , interior, pop up lights... anything that weighs anything and is not required for driving... add hydraulic handbrake, add rollcage..

it's your basic race car conversion, no different then what the track boys do. with the added hydraulic handbrake and a higher ride height(i could use a bit of travel in my suspension..)

except i'll maintain a higher ride height... i could use a bit of travel in my suspension..

So awesome.

svandamme 03-02-2008 11:51 AM

btw no NA 944's were ever homologated for rally'ing, so even today, you cannot enter them in any FIA rally...just 924's, 924turbo, 928S's and 944 turbo's are on the list

959Komfort 03-02-2008 11:54 AM

That sucks.
