Overhaulin' my 83
I joined this board about a year ago because I began to rebuild my 944. It was vandalized on my birthday (no connection) and I was at a crossroads; either sell it or rise from the ashes. My 2 sons convienced me to rebuild it. I am the original owner of this car and hadn't worked on a car since the 70's. With allot of help it is now done.
There are many people on this board who have helped me and I cannot thank you enough. I couldn't have done it without all of your knowledge. Every post I read or created, I learned something. I now know every inch of this car - almost. so....... Here is a list of what I did. NICE WORK! That car looks awesome! I really like the dark lenses with the black body! It looks really good and looks like you put plenty of goodies in it as well, good work. I hope my car can look that nice one day, hehe. First, where did you get those lights, or how did you "tint" them like that? Also, if you dont mind, about how much did this cost you? With all you did Im sure it cost a good amount, I would like to know, in case I ever want to go down this road...

I liked the light tints. I experimented first. I bought a rear light off ebay for $15.00. From a previous post from this board I bought a can of candy apple red model spray paint and painted the entire light. lt looked good. My second option, I bought a vinyl kit off ebay; 9 inch x 15 inch piece for $10. I cut out the vinyl (adhesive backed) and placed them on all of my lights. I really liked that better than the paint. The advantage here is that I could remove the vinyl when/if it degraded or if I got tired of it. The body shop I had the work done, suggested I tint every light, except my headlights and front fog lights. The side markers, front directional signals and rear lights are tinted. They are painted and baked. You also can have a varying degree of tint depending on the light and what it is used for. I did not tint he 3rd brake light.
I can't tell you the exact cost but it is somewhere in the area of $150-$300 for all of the lights. This includes labor to remove/install.

I didnt notice them before, but nice aero side mirrors too, they look sleek. Thanks for the how-to on the lights, I may look into that one day. Again, good work!

Yes, yes yes! It's so nice to see a rebuild like this. I'm kinda partial to the 83 & this really makes me want to do more work on my car.
The mirrors, the wheels, the color, the interior - yes! Feel free to post more pics (without dumpsters in the background).

Jim, i didnt think you were so close to finishing up on the car. The hard work and money paid off, it looks fantastic.
Now adjust those camber eccentrics on the rear to drop the ride height in the back!

Jon,
Good catch. That is all I need to do. I just finished it before Thanksgiving. Got to get a wheel alignment and drop the rear. I just couldn't wait to drive it. This thing is better than new. I couldn't have done this without you.

Congratulations. You turned a good deed.
If you check the figures in K. Gross's 944 FAQ, you'll notice that not many 1983 MY 944 cars were imported to North America, so it's a relatively rare model year. |

Fantastic job Jim. I definately want to drive up to one of the 944 nights in Chicago after the weather breaks in the Spring. How much did the seat redo run you? I am right now starting to need to have the bolster on the driver's side done and I might as wel have both seats totally done at once.
Thanks a lot and again, very nice job. Steve
