'84 Project Thread

Okeeday. If you haven't figured it out, I've got a 1984 944 with just over 85,000 on the odometer. I picked it up quite cheap for 500 and this will be my first hobby/project car. (pauses for laughter to die down) Yes, it's quite foolish to go so deep the first go round with no experience but opportunity slapped me and desire took over.

Now, here's a rundown of my situation.
She needs TLC
She needs a name
Engine is close to running, conditions are unknown and vary.
I currently live in an apartment
I currently am about to move from the apartment to somewhere else by no outright choice of my own.
I have a small, but decent income. That will make this a long and slow build.
Time is also small being that I work and attend college and have my obligation to Drill (National Guard) on a weekend of the month.
Tools are a little limited. I have a good cover on the basics, but others such as torque wrench, engine hoist (useless for this vehicle I found), and others of the like I don't have.

ERAU944 recommended the water pump, timing belt, and belt rollers as a first. I have to agree. With all projects though, money is an issue. So as time goes by I will have a goal of X but will fill my spare time with the smaller stuff I can do. Investigation will be a long part of this.

With my current housing situation, which just happened this week, that will put everything on hold of course. I was glad to hear her make some noise though.

I had searched online for the option codes and discovered that the sticker is supposed to be in the trunk area underneath the carpet. Open it up and go looking around and guess what's missing? Maybe it got pulled off, maybe it peeled, maybe I'm looking in the wrong spot. Can anyone tell me if those stickers can be reproduced? That's an end of project issue, but if I can get it answered now, cool.

So after all this rambleing comes 'the plan':
Breath some life into her.
Diagnose issues with the engine. Idle, misfire, etc. etc.
Remove engine and attack with tooth brush, make repairs/replacements as necessary.
About this same time start better examining the drive train. Work from engine out to wheels to include suspension.
Replace engine. Begin electrical (Lord grant me patience).
Move into the interior/aesthetics.
Exterior.
Detail/documentation.
Block at Scottsdale for 50k+.

I will keep all who wish to know appraised of whats going on and I will be asking a lot of questions as time goes by.

Sounds like fun... maybe? I also have an '84 that I got almost 2 years ago. It is a fun fun car. Good luck and post up projects that you do, so we can all follow along and learn please.

Hello,

Welcome to the world of a continuious hobby. With all of the work and maintenance that you say may be due, and according to your budget please get the early Volumes of the Original Porsche Workshop Manuals - It is just hard to do without them when you are doing your own work. You can get the original volumes semi-hard bound in ring binders as printed by Porsche. There is also a second way, and more economical, is to get a CD copy of the volumes, and print your pages as you work (these can be found on eBay at times). Pelican Parts sell the originals new - eBay often can have them used - etc.

Welcome and have pfunn,
Ed.
