lol.

I wasn't going to until next Monday (give it two weeks since it was replaced).

Murphy says that as soon as I call it fixed, It'll stop working.

Bugger Murphy! IT'S FIXED! :D

It's been starting successfully for over a week now, nine days to be exact. It does appear that replacing the speed sensor has fixed the problem (I actually replace both sensors as a precaution).

It had finally got to the point where I had decided to just keep throwing money at it and replace things until it was fixed - cheapest things first (hence why the Lindsay harness went in).

It also appears that the previous sensor failed after four months service (a new one was fitted in June last year - fault first appeared in October). A **** of a fault, that first appeared as a failure to start very intermittently (once every couple of weeks), over time it became more consistent, to the point where it would be a surprise if it started. I originally dismissed the sensors, as they were relatively new at the time, and the signal coming from them looked correct.

Anyway, for the time being. I'm happy again! The car is running great, although I've now got the rear hatch off to repair the hinges - another story maybe?

So, Comicbook, how lucky do you feel? It sounds like you've reached the same point I have. Replace the sensors - the beamer ones are cheap in comparison.

Cheers

Solved it!

Over the past 3 days, my car gave up normal starting all together. It done it's usual thing --the starter turns the engine rapidly, but no spark or fuel. I resorted to "pop starting" it, and it started right up every time --never fail. I finally got my starter and replaced it last night while I was at work. The car fired right up the first time, and has started good since. I have noticed that it now starts a little sooner than it had before.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat1.gif

To share my symptoms:

First of all, the car would start fine in 70-80 degree weather, but if I drove it somewhere, and shut it off, the little bugger wouldn't restart. The thing would seem to turn-over fine, but there would be no spark or fuel. The car then would start whenever it felt the need to. It done this all last summer and when October came, and it got cool out; the car would not start at all. It finally started again this spring. I changed it's coil, cap, rotor, battery, and DME relay. I suspected either the starter or DME. I tried knocking on the DME while starting it, and it started. I promptly replace the DME, but the problem was still there, and if I knocked on it; it would sometimes start too. One day I happened to be on an incline, so I tried "pop starting" it --it worked, and since then, the car never failed to "pop start". I then suspected the starter. Although it was turning the engine over at a healthy speed, and didn't seem to be "dragging"; the starter had an aged tone to it. I now believe it was depriving the DME of the voltage required to function while it was turning the engine. This thing had been a thorn in my side for the past 18 months, and I'm very glad it's over.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

i just replaced the d.m.e thermostat as mine starts first time every time when the weather is cold .it only struggles a bit after shut down for over 30 mins or left for a couple of days when the weather got warmer it really got very consistant,7 or so cranks before she fires and she runs very rich for first few mins so im putting all my chips on the thermo , i have cheked and replaced every thing else almost ,
it has never actually failed to start but its just annoying cranking and cranking makes a great car look bad . im afraid to go out tonight to try it i just dont think im ready for the dissapointment !!!!! :ohttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1220993107.jpg

HI Jeff,

I appreciated reading the thread. I also have a '93 944 with the same symptoms. I was beginning to get frustrated because the local mechanics have no idea where to start when I describe the problem. Now I know to start with the sensor. I found them at Auto Haus AZ at $60 for the Bosch, and $40 for the FAE unit. Any insight as to which one to go with? Thanks for your help!

for that price difference, i'd go with the bosch. you can also use a BMW unit that is cheaper, but made by bosch.

Update on my intermittent starting problem - I purchased the Bosch sensor and began investigating the process of removing the old one, and also tried to determine which one was at fault. Apparently I only had a contact issue, as I haven't had another start failure since wiggling the plug-ends to see how they are attached. It's been a month and a half so far. I'll hang onto the spare sensor just in case though.

i have this issue, too. it is very intermittent.

DannoXYZ 01-15-2015 12:17 AM

I had this intermittent start issue for about a year. When it occurs, I discovered I could wiggle the sensor-connectors and it would start up. I narrowed it down to the male-end sensor-side connector for one of the sensors. Replacing that took care of the issue.

It's also common for the harness-side connector to have frayed wires underneath the rubber-boot. It carefully removed the rubber boot and found the insulation crumbing, but wiring was still good. So I just siliconed the area where the wires goes into the connector (stress-riser) and filled the boot with silicone and re-installed it.

So far, about 18-months without any issues.
