Shifter Fix !!!!!!!!

When I bought my car the shifter was very limp (It needed some Viagra for shifters

I decided to pickup a new shifter from Pelican Parts
The shifter installed...hmm not very happy with the outcome
It was better, but not great. I thought about buying a Short Shifter, but I just bought the new OEM shifter. I started to study the shifter, and realized the problem is with the rod that goes back to the Transmission. It has not guide to keep it from floating around...?

Today I installed a new shifter boot from Rennbay...very nice quality !!!

So what did I do ?

This is what I did and may not be for everyone

I started with some black (color does not matter of course) Duct tape.

I wrapped the fitting on the lower shifter with tape as tight as I could get it...this keeps all the movement from the shaft and clamp intact. I know another method is using a bolt and thread, but the tape works awesome. Next I took some lubricate and shot some out the door of the car to get a nice clean stream, then tipped the can and shot it right down the shaft toward the transmission (make sure you have a sprayer with a fine stream, not spray or use the red extention tube) next I took some garden hose and slit it all the way down about 4 inches of it. and I slid it on the shaft and forced it through the foam that houses the shifter shaft, I wrapped some duct tape around that as well and made sure everything was tight, last thing I need is to not be able to hit a gear Put everything back together and wow, what a difference, feels like brandnew.

Now you understand why your questioning why the door is painted a different color huh?

Garden hose & duct tape. That's a new one.

Bet if you would of replaced the pastic bushing it would of been a huge improvement and you wouldn't of had to go through that.

It won't last you another 20 years, but I'm sure duct tape will be around when you need to fix it again.

I didn't think lamp cords had a limited life?!? I know that socks are only good for 15-20K miles.. But lamp cords....... I've never replaced mine.

It won't last another 2 years, but it is a nice tight fix for now. I am going to have the entire setup rebuilt the way I want it...tight. Just add it to the list

Do tube socks tension better than low cut ones? And does color/pattern matter? I was thinking a nice argyle pattern to add some flare but I didn't know if they would affect how my car idles....I'm an ass.

respect, though, for thinking out of the box. I think there's a little MacGuyver in all of us.
I've "field engineered" solutions to more than a few problems, some lasted a few hours, some several years.

I wasn't trying to speak ill of a new idea, I just love a socks comment any time I can fit it in....hope all works out well with the shifter and if it does last, maybe it's something new for the 944 community....
