Rattle in the rear at 2000rpm
I have just had my s2 gearbox rebuilt with new 2nd and 5th gear synchros and i have also had a rebuilt clutch with spring center installed as well. Now between 2000 and 2300 rpm when decelerating there is a horrendous rattle coming from the rear. My Mechanic things it might be the torque tube because when you spin it by had you can here the bearings but it is only a bearing sound and doesn't sound like bearings have gone. Car has done about 70,000 miles.
The rattle only seems evident in 2nd and 3rd and doesn't seem there in 4th or 5th at the same rev range. There is no rattle apparent when accelerating. Because it only happens within the rev range i wonder if it could be something else . Does anybody have any suggestions???? My mechanic is taking the car to the local porsche dealer this week as they have offered to look at it for free. I have spent over $9,000 on repairs in last 6 months (new zealand dollars that is) and really can;t bear the thought of parting with any more cash right now.

How are the CV joints? The torque tube would suck to buy/repair and to install. When my CV's went though they did a different thing. Sounded like a one legged horse following me at lower speeds but once i picked up speed it got better. Also check all the exhaust mounts. Once I had a bad rattle that I thought was my torque tube going out, but it turned out to just be my exhaust mount bracket needed tightened.

did you by chance go to a lightweight or solid flywheel? did you further exacerbate that by failing to balance the setup?

Start with the simple stuff that would have been affected by the rebuild first:
Check all the exhaust mounting points. Check the exhaust heat shields. Check all the shift linkage mounting points/joints. Check the CV joints where they attach to the transaxel and wheel hub, it is not unusual for the cheesehead bolts to back off. jmd_forest

I would check the exhaust mounts. Most likely the cause.

I'm with the rest..probably exhaust or exhaust heat shields.
