Question 1988 944 won't start .... Please help!!!

Hello. This is the first 944 that I have owned. Unfortunately it won't run. It had been sitting for a while when I bought it. Overall in really good shape. 100K miles, automatic, not an S model. The engine turns over, but won't fire up. I sprayed some starter fluid into it and it ran for a brief second, so I thought maybe a fuel pump issue. I listened for the pump to activate when the key is turned on and didn't hear anything coming from it. Today I swapped out the pump with one from another 88. Again, no noise coming from the pump and the engine won't fire up. I keep hearing a clicking/light knocking noise coming from the back of the engine when it's turning over. Not quite sure if it's supposed to do that or if that's any indication as to what the problem may be? I did not check to see if the pump was getting 12 volts, but that's next on my list. The car did have an aftermarket alarm system installed that seems to have a mind of it's own, so I took the fuses out of it to disable. I wonder if the aftermarket alarm has some kind of fuel pump shutoff feature and is not letting it get 12 volts to activate? I also put another DME relay in as well. I heard some talk about crank sensors maybe being the culprit, but then I should still hear the fuel pump activate when I first turn the key on, right? Honestly, I am scratching my head and am looking for any help I can get before spending huge amounts of money on the wrong parts. I really appreciate any feedback . Thanks.

Good sigh that it ran for a sec with the fluid. Hopefully they put some fuel stabilizer in or it didnt sit long enough to varnish, if it did get the junk out and start with some fresh gas. Put a big rag under the nut at the end of the fuel rail and crack the nut open (carefully), put a hose on the end and run it into a bottle or just cover it with a towel and crank the car and see if you have fuel coming out.

your fuel injectors are most likely clogged and your gas is probably shot, that happened to me over the winter with my 924S that sat...i'd say try tapping the fuel injectors with the tip of a screwdriver to see if they come unclogged, but before you do that i'd do what was suggested above and take the fuel rail nut off and run some fuel into a cup or whatever...if it smells like paint thinner and looks like someone pee'd in your cup you know you need to drain the gas tank...also check your fuel filter, it might be very clogged!

also, you can check you're fuel pumps workingness (is that a word?)...wait...you can check if you're fuel pump works...(that's better)...by hooking it directly up to a power source for just a second...to test mine i hooked it up to a battery charger/jump starter and flipped the switch for just a second to see if it worked or not...that will tell you whether the fuel pump you got is actually good, and you're not getting power to it, or if you're fuel pump is bad...

Since it runs with starting fluid, you know you've got a fuel problem of some kind. After cranking over a few times, crack the nut at the front of the fuel rail a few turns. Fuel should spurt out under high pressure (Take precautions for fire). If no spurting, check the fuel pump fuse, change out the DME relay, and check the fuel pump. If fuel spurts out, either the injectors aren't firing, or they are "bound up". Try using a BIG screwdriver, hold it like a pool cue, and tap each injector gently but firmly at the base. If this doesn't work, try getting a set of NOID lights to check if the injectors are firing.

I would do as rich suggested and check for bad fuel first before starting it. It could be that your fuel filter is plugged with varnish and keeping fuel from going to the fuel rail...could be the fuel pump isn't working. The fuel pump is only turned on while the engine is turning over as a safety feature so the fuel pump doesn't run if you are in an accident and pump all your fuel on the ground. That's one of the job of the sensors to tell the DME that the engine is turning over and it's ok to turn the fuel pump on. You can bypass all that safety stuff by jumping the DME relay and turn the fuel pump on. The clicking sound you are hearing is probably the fuel injectors....that's normal.
