Question putting air in spare

probably a stupid question; but if you inflate the spare will it still fit in its tray?

Umm, No - thats why its deflated. You should have a small electric air compressor in your storage compartment

Spin Off Question

No pun intended. If you inflate and use the spare, can you then deflate it and get in to fold back down and fit in its housing?

I've never quite trusted those collapsable thingies. There was one in my wife's 944. We ditched it and bought the traditional steel wheel. You can keep that inflated - providing you get the rear carpet with the bigger hump.

I dont know that I would even trust the spare tire at this point. They are now 20+ years old in most cases. Has anyone successfully used their spare??

My wife used both hers and my spares on the front quite recently (three weeks back) - so she could legally drive to the shop to buy a set of tyres. Surprisingly both are in great shape with no cracking or signs of deterioration. I guess it must be because they're safely tucked out of the way of adverse temperature and UV rays.

I once fully inflated mine to check to see if it would hold air. It did just fine and was in very good condition. unfortunately after deflating it, the tire never got back to as small as it used to be so it pushes on the carpet in the rear a bit.

I need to get myself a new compressor- like most people, the original did not come with the car...

After I first got my car I went about checking the air pressure in all 5 tires. I thought the spare was flat so started to put air in. When it started to unfold I checked it out a bit and only then realized it was supposed to be a flat spare. I felt pretty dumb but then I think it's a pretty dumb idea too.

...
You kind of have to sit on it, or something like that, while holding the valve open and then releasing the valve before the tire. That worked for mine.

BTW, I drove on my collapsible spare for several hundred miles without any trouble, other than it handled like crap, especially in the wet! Actually it was quite scarry in the wet going around off ramps and such.

I had a rear get a sidewall shear flat on my way to work one day. Used my spare with a bicycle pump. Drove the car over to get a new set on the rear with no problems at all.

Took the air out of it and it went back to its original shape with no issues.

Cheers,

Keith
