Car will not start after sitting for a few days

Hello All,

My 944 sat for a few days and today it wouldn't start. It had been raining must of the time the car was parked outside. I did notice the battery was drained. After trying to start the car there was a strong smell of gas. I put in a brand new battery and still the car tried to start but simply wouldn't turn over. And yes the smell of gas returned. The car has nearly a full tank of fuel.

I am stuck and in need of help.

You need to help us out a little. When you say the car wouldn't turn over...do you mean the starter doesn't work, the starter spins but the engine doesn't crank/turn over, or the engine cranks over with the starter but the engine won't start. Please provide as much detail as possible.

Sorry about the vagueness.
The starter is trying to get the engine going. The engine almost starts but not completely. I wait a sec and retry to and the engine is cranking but never starts.

Could something be wet?
It was outside in the rain for a few days without being driven.
I am probably due for some new spark plugs after having the current ones for over 3yrs. After not getting it started there is a strong smell of gas.

By "the engine almost starts" I'm assuming it coughs and sputters but won't start completely. You can try pulling off the distributor cap, wiping it clean with a paper towel and giving it a shot of WD-40. Also, give the wires a light shot of WD-40. WD-40 is a water displacer and can help dry out wet ignition. If that doesn't work, try opening up the air cleaner and giving the engine a shot of starting fluid into the intake.

jmd_forest I took your advice and sprayed WD40. I also put in new spark plugs. It took awhile but it eventually started. Took it for a one mile drive and it felt like it had more power.

Am I missing a plug or is this open hole normal?

Thank DMRK!
Much appreciated.
Do you think not having that plug has lead to my moisture concerns?

Shouldn't be the problem. If the plastic behind the rotor is still there, then you should be ok. Start the car at night and open the hood. If you have a hood light that works, take the bulb out for a second so it's dark in the engine bay. Now look for sparks. You might also consider replacing the cap and rotor and possibly plug wires.
