Connection to clutch housing

I was digging around checking connections to fix a starting problem when I found a wire with a 3-pin female socket on it that isn't plugged into anything.

This is a grey (maybe tan) wire that connects to the bell housing on the back of the engine, a little forward and below the 2 sensors that connect to the housing.

I looked around for it's male counterpart but didn't find anything...anyone know what it is or where it goes?

My car is a 1986 N/A car.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/ign-02.htm - the connection is shown on the first picture of this page...below and to the left of the 2 that are being discussed...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Pete

Sounds like the O2 Sensor cable has fallen loose. It's suppose to attach to mate close to the firewall about the center of engine from the top side. Is car running crazy rich, as that is what having it disconnected would do. Smell exhaust if it smell like fresh gas.

Also the sensor you pointed from clarks has similar shape and connects and same area by firewall.

Bottoms ups, ahe.

That's the knock sensor not the O2 sensor. It wont be your issue. If I remember right it's not hooked up to anything

Thanks for the input...

How about timing mark sender? I dug around some diagrams and it looks a bit like the one...not seen any photos though.

I will take a picture this evening and post it.

Now that I'm not on pain meds I'm thinking I could be wrong. However, I do know that it absolutely isn't the O2 sensor.

I'm not sure what it is, but I do know that is not connected to anything. The plug on the end of that wire has a rubber boot over it on my car. I think it may be used in some way for diagnostics, but I am not sure.

Ok, good, seems someone else has the same (unconnected) cable!

Ultimately I solved the starting problems and this had nothing to do with it...now I'm just curious.

I don't have my service manuals with me to be absolutely certain but I agree that it is used for diagnostics. Normally (if the car is equipped with this sensor)the connector is capped and attached to the engine lifting ring on the back of the cam tower.

I think we need a picture here. There is a diagnostic plug back there but there are also many others. Hard to tell which one you are talking about.

It's the one that's in the same housing as the speed/ref sensors. I think it's a diag sensor, but can't remember which one right now. Head is still a little foggy from all the meds.

I'm 99% sure that's the TDC sensor for diagnostic purposes. I think it needs some special Porsche tool to hook up to it in order to use it.

Yes, that's a tester plug. There is no wire from the car that plugs into that. That's usually fastened to the back of the cam tower I think.
