Rounded cam tower allen bolt
Taking the cam tower off today, all the port cover bolts and cam tower bolts came off relatively easy - except one, that was already rounded-out. I put the allen socket in and it just turns. No idea how it happened or what to do about it. Ideas?

Will work for parts

A really big easy-out. Hammer it in and twist the plug out, then buy a new plug.

Use an SAE allen wrench in it...can't remember the size but just bigger than the metric one. You may have to drive it in with a hammer but then it will come out. CJ, I'm unclear whether you said it was one of the cover plugs or one of the bolts holding the cam tower on. If it is one of the bolts holding the cam tower itself on, then put the bolts back in around the stripped one and tighten them back up. That will take the pressure off the bad bolt and help you loosen it. If it's just one of the plugs, then of course none of that applies.

A few years back i bought a set of stripped bolt remover sockets. They have swirling teeth inside. I used them to remove a few stripped allen bolts on a 928 door yesterday. Even with a perfectly round ouside like allen bolts they still bite in. What part of CT are you in?

Like razor said make sure to reinstall the other cam tower bolts so as to take the tension off of the bad one regardless of how you decide to remove it.
Good luck, Speedy ![]()

One trick that usually works is to strike the left half of the bolt head with a cold chisel until you cut a small slot in it. Then gradually increase the strike angle until it's about 45 degrees so the impact turns the bolt head counter-clockwise. However, if its one one of the bolts on the inside of the tower this probably won't work.

It is one of the several (8?) cam tower bolts UNDERNEATH the cam tower, very accessable. Needless to say, I am hoping that none of the internal cam bolts are stripped (I have a long 6mm hex socket on the way)...
THanks for the tips, guys. I will put in the neighboring bolts, and try the SAE hex first. If that doesn't work, I have an easy-out on the way. If that doesn't work, maybe I'll try Euroshark's method (I'm in West Hartford, BTW).

I was considering having a little get-together at my place on what I hope will be the last day of reassembly. I would expect some time in late April.

What timing, I just ran into this yesterday, one bolt inside the cam and one outside. Wasn't to difficult
-reinstall surrounding bolts as mentioned by Tom -I hammered in a Snap-On 10mm torx bit -apply steady pressure while turning came out no problem, good luck. Rob

I would take a 6mm long hex and hammer it in. and if it doesn't bite. try a 7mm.

Oddly enough, this happened to me last week too. The one holding the heater coolant tube was rounded off, all the others were fine.
I tried "waking them up" by tapping with a hammer. I sprayed with PBlaster and let it sit for a few days. I tried the "Bolt Out" tool as mentioned above by Euroshark. Seems to be a great tool but they did not have a size that would grip on the cam bolts. Damn. In a moment of desperation before I drilled/cut the head off, I grabbed a T40 torx bit and it worked perfectly. The bolts are not that tight and shouldn't have any thread lock on them. They crack as they break loose then they come right out. Here is my advice. DON'T USE CHEAP ALLEN WRENCHES. Check fitment before use. I have three different brands of allen wrenches and they all fit slightly different. Also avoid using the 6" allen wrench unless you have to(inside the tower). You will notice the shaft twist a lot when under torque rather than transfering it to the bolt. You can imagine the problem with this. You want the bolt turning, not the wrench shaft(stripped bolt)
