bad window relay?
 

My power windows on my '84 944 will not go down (or up for that matter) i tested the old relay by connecting the 30 to 87 (bypassing the relay) and the power windows worked. so i bought a new relay and plug it in but they still don't work. So is the new relay bad too? or something else is wrong? Thanks in advance.

Usually its just dirty contacts in the switches. You can take them apart (carefully) and clean them up and they'll work like new. You will need to do all three. The switches themselves are interchangable, but the circuit wiring is goofy, especially for the pass. window. I'm pretty sure there's a DIY on clarks-garage.com

The switches worked when i bypassed the relay, why would they not work when i plug in the relay? Do i really need a relay?

There are three more connections on the relay that you need to test.
86 - From ignition switch
85 - Ground
85b - Door switch

When you jumped 30 and 87, you basically bypassed the control circuit from 86, 85 and 85b.
