My fuel filler area drain plug dissappeared

Help - the rubber grommet on the fuel filler door drain hole fell inside. How do I go about retrieving it? From the inside or from underneath the car?

Thanks,
Spud

Did it go inside your gas tank? If so pull your sending unit underneath the hatch carpet and take a look with a flashlight to see if you can see it anywhere and if so get one of those little claw things with the flex line to retrieve it.

The little cubby holes on either side of the hole that the spare tire is in. I highly doubt that it could have made its way into the actual tank.

I thought he was talking about the rubber stopper piece that is glued to the inside of the fuel door before the cap. Mine got loose and I had to reglue it in the past.

OK - let me clarify and ask another question.

I'm referring to the rubber grommet / drain plug that drains water / spilleg gas from the opening behind the fuel filler door. The grommet dissappeared down it's own hole. I did not fall into the tank.

Is there a drain hose attached to the grommet? Where does water / fuel go when it goes down the hole?

Is there a way to get inside of the opening from the backside to retrieve the part?

You can unsnap your carpet on that side. If you reach back in the cavity you will see the hose and the plug/drain piece hanging loose. If the rubber is worn down on the piece that snaps into the sheet metal it can be hard to reconnect the hose as it tries to snap out. The plug is easier to install from ourside and connect the hose from inside. It helps to use some black windshield adhesive on the plug and let it set up. Then have someone hold the plug down as you reconnect the hose from inside. I found if I tried to reconnect the hose to the rubber piece 'outside' the car first it was too big to get back into the hole.

2Tight - thanks the help. I unsnapped the carpet just like you said and bingo there it was. It was a bit of a fiddle to get it to go back together and back in the hole but it all worked out.

Thanks for the tip.

The forum is great!!!
