No Fire?
Ok, Seen This Question A Couple Times On Other Sites, But Haven's Seen A Really Solid Answer:
I Am A New Porsche Owner And Can Kind Of Hold My Own Mechanically, Not A Genius, But Here It Goes. Have A 1988 944, Recently Underwent An Engine Swap. Ran Good For A Week Or Two And Then Started Having Problems Starting. Engine Cranks Great (by Use Of Toggle Switch, Not The Ignition Switch). Cracked The Fuel Line By The Rail And Had Good Fuel Pressure And Spray. Not Seeing Any Spark From My Wires. New Wires, Cap, Rotor, And Bosch Platinum +2 Plugs. Doesn't Seem Like I'm Getting Any Fire? Any Suggestions On Where To Start?? I've Heard Everything From Dme's And Relays To Air Flow Sensors And Not Sure What To Do. Appreciate Any Help, Andrew Kelley |

Does the tach bounce when you try to start it? Sometimes the crank reference and speed sensors are to blame for this. Mine did this to me once and it turned out that the ancient plastic clip-connectors has actually cracked and were loose. I pushed them together and electric taped the hell outta them and haven't had a problem (*with that*) ever since. It's a good place to start. Also if you've not checked it out....clarks-garage.com has some very valuble information under "shop manual" on the side bar. Good luck and let us know how things go.

Check your reference sensors where they bolt onto the bell housing as well as reference sensor connections to the main wiring harness. Check your DME relay. It's actually 2 relays in 1 ... 1 actuates the fuel pump and the other the DME. You can remove the relay, pry off the cover, and reinstall the relay then watch it work while someone else cranks over the engine.
Also, it sounds like you have some problems with the ignition switch ? You may need to replace the electrical switch portion, not really hard to do. Next would be to try to borrow a known good DME computer (or send it off to 944Online.com to have it tested for free) and see if it fires up with the new DME, or swap your DME into a known running car. Also, you might want to check that your rotor is still seated correctly. jmd_forest
