Rev limiter?

Quick question... Does an early '85 944 have a rev limiter or not? I could have sworn I saw and heard it bouncing off the redline while I was testing out my new tires in a vacant parking lot, and yet when I free-revved it to verify my suspicions it did not hit any sort of limiter (whoops...). I'd just like to know how careful I need to be when approaching the redline, since it's kind of not good to have to keep looking at the tach when you're trying to get a fast time while autocrossing :/

Yeah, the DME limits early cars to 6,500 RPM. If I remember correctly, it cuts off the fuel.

FR Wilk made chips for early cars with a 7,000 RPM limit. I'm not sure if he's around still or not.

My 83 does indeed have a limiter and I experienced this on many occasions.

Ok, excellent. I'm guessing it must be hooked up somehow through the gearbox? I'm fairly certain it happened when I was in gear and moving, yet it went well beyond the redline when I revved it in neutral. Not a comfortable feeling when you expect a limiter to kick in and it doesn't... :/

Cutting the fuel doesn't have an immediate effect in a revving situation only while driving. The rev limited is within the DME as stated and not on the transaxle.

Or you can be like me and have a chip that removes the rev limiter ;-)

I hope not - This is my "lazy" car... The Z is the one that's supposed to keep my heart going 1000 times a second, lol.

I see what you're saying with the fuel-cutoff though - I was just curious as to why it over-revved and thought the computer might not trigger it unless it's in gear or something, since my sister's Legacy will cut-out instantly even in free-rev. Different car with different technology so I can't really compare them, but it's just a point of interest to me.

I shall try it again while in gear this weekend and post up my findings to bring closure to this topic.
