Balance shaft delete on a street engine, bad idea?

I am in the process of rebuilding my friends '84 944 engine. I've heard about race engines with no balance shafts, would the extra vibrations shorten the life of the engine? How much harsher would it actually be?

Thanks
Kevin

You mean no balance shaft belt right? Your not going to try and remove the balance shafts are you?

No belt would be the easiest, but i was thinking of removing the shafts completly and fabing up some block off plates....with no shafts I'm thinking I could have issues with oil pressure though, would I?

Thanks
Kevin

Why must we have these anyway**? What do other straight fours do about vibration. What other motors use them? I don't recall vw using them...nor do I recall their motors vibrating themselves apart.

**bitter cause balance shaft bearing failure destroyed my last engine.

The engine doesn't vibrate itself apart on most other cars. They do certain things to dampen the vibrations as much as possible... such as softer engine mounts, weight the crank differently, dual-mass flywheels, etc.

Porsche licensed the balance-shaft technology from Mitsubishi. It was not necessary, but helpful when considering comfort for the driver and passengers. Recommended for a street car, optional for a track car.

On second thought I'm just going to leave them, I was just trying to simplify the engine. It's probably more work than it's worth for no real gain, well except a harsher ride!!

Thanks for the info guys!!

worth 7 hp.

May cause vibration at a certain frequency which will decrease the fatigue life of components which would cause premature failure.

Most four-bangers are smaller than the 944.

The 2.5L...going up to 2.7L and 3.0L are very big for 4-cylinder engines. The VWs go up to about 2.0 (maybe 2.1).

Heavier pistons and rods and everything else that rotates cause more vibrations.
