electrical help

ok so after diagnosing my fuel pump dead. well it made me think how did it die in a 4 month period. "that's when i since started it" probably something else caused it?
i also noted that when i tested it, there would be no volts till u get the engine cranking. and then it would be at 8 volts. I'm thinking 8 volts is correct voltage. yet the fact that their was no juice till the engine was cranking. could that be a bad relay or like a lack of grounding?

thanks, Levi

no juice till cranking is correct, its a safety feature that only lets the pump run when the motor is turning. you should have 12v at the pump
also if your pumps keep failing make sure the in tank screen is good

If you are only getting 8V under load at the pump you could have either some damaged or corroded wiring/connection or the primary pick-up screen filter in the tank is very dirty. If the pump has to work too hard or the grounding is weak it will result in a voltage drop and damage the pump. Before you do anything make sure all your wire connections are clean and tight. You can run a jumper in the DME relay slot and measure voltage again at the pump without the engine cranking. This will give you a better idea of what the voltage at the pump really is without the additional load from the starter at the same time. Don't do any testing unless you have a fully charged battery with clean terminals. Good luck and hopefully you'll back on the road.

8V will be the bare minimum that the DME will be happy to run with. You may get problems with it also. It would be a good idea to fix your low volts soon.

There's a lot of dirt kicked up in the fuel pump area... I'd have a look at the connections at the pump, filter and screen like everyone else said.
