Uh oh. First Roadblock...

Okay, so I'm finishing up my head gasket job and am to the final stages. I was venting and filling the coolant system and discovered a coolant leak coming from the back of the engine. It's running down and off both sides of the block. What did I forget? Any ideas where specifically it's coming from? It's tough to tell without taking the intake off...

In one of the below pics, I drew red arrows to show where the most coolant is running down the bottom of the engine

Make sure you close the bleed screw. Its probably leaking across the cylinder head. Ask me how i know.. .

I'm kinda thinking it's something to do with the rear water pipe, next to the cycling valve... but I'll check the bleed screw first.

that is my first guess. i always use RTV along with the gasket on that one.

Yup, one of the bolts holding the rear water pipe to the head wasn't tight enough. Great. Just added another few hours to my job...

Thats better than getting coolant in your clutch and then having to do that job. If you thought the HG was a challenge the clutch would be hell.

the coolant runs into the window on the bell housing, i would guess.

i always try to put the water neck and bracket on the head before installing the head back on the block because it is such a pain.

Yeah, I wish I thought of that. It literally took me HOURS to get those two frickin bolts back onto the assembly with the head still in the car.
