Budget door panel restoration
I was wondering if anyone has done a door panel restoration ? Both my door panels, especially the drives side have stripped screw holes, the material is coming loose on the edges, and I noticed the driver side lower corner is missing the heavy cardboard backing
. I was planning on taking these off buying some new backer matrial for the driver side and restoring them. On my old VW i used a really thin sheet of plywood and used the old door panel as a template to make a new back. I was thinking I may go with new material for the door panels as well, maybe a black microfiber (that would look sweeeet). Thanks for advice....

I would suggest that instead of trying to restore your beat up panels that you take a look in the classified section of this site, 944online, and ebay and find some good used panels. I've seen them up for bid as low as $10 on ebay.

I know what you are saying, the problem is I have the rare speaker upgrade door panels, I plan on upgrading these speakers and keeping the original look.

I have new seat upholstery to install - black with brown leather inserts. Maybe duplicate that on the door panels. Still not sure what to use for backer material, but will cover with closed cell foam to insulate a bit. Work in progress and welcome to any suggestions. |

Find a local upholstery shop (or 2 or 3). Take your panel with you and go talk to them. Find out what they would do to reupholster the panel. If the price is good, let them do it. If the price is too high, now you'll have some ideas on how to do it yourself.

What is that door picture of? I don't think I have ever seen a 944 door with a post on it.

Its a 1990 944S2 cabrio. This was the upgraded stereo option, which is return is a poorly made extra speaker fabrication on the door. There are 3 extra speakers under the grill and also a tweeter upper door panel.
