Squeeking in the Bell Housing - Any

I have a recently acquired 968 that has a squeeking coming out of the bell housing. The noise comes and goes and is not dependent on whether the car is moving or still, or in or out of gear. Clutch and gear changing and everything else is working fine. My mechanic, who seems pretty good, reckons he has not heard anything quite like it before and is not sure what the cause is. Obviously we need to go in and find the problem, but I'd be like to hear if any one has an idea what the might be going on and how urgently I should have it attended to. My car budget is getting a bit low for this year... Thanks!
