12V air compressor / tire inflator?

Today I discovered, in the spare tire well of my recently purchased 1985 Series I a 12V auxillary air compressor for inflating tires. The paperwork in the box reads "electro air compressor - Porsche 000-003-273-01" Made by Webster Mfg. London, ON.

Can anyone tell me if this was a dealer option?

The compressor is housed in aa molded white plastic case with a short inflater hose & a long 12V lead that plugs into the cigarette lighter.

It is for inflating the collapsible spare tire. The tire is stored empty.

In the immortal words of Homer Simpson ---- "DOH !!!!"

You saved me from future frustration in the event of a flat tire, though I still exposed myself to the public humiliation of this forum.

"DOH !!!!" (with appropriate forehead slap with open palm)

Don't worry about it. It happens to everyone all the time.

The true Porsche ones sell for big money on eBay. The new generic ones from wherever work better and faster but the concourse folks love the OE type. It's a good idea to test yours before thinking it works, the seals can go bad in dry climates. I almost bought one at a swap meet but it wouldn't inflate a rubber ducky it leaked so bad.

Probably it was just an o-ring. That style of compressor is oil-less so only the seal at the end can go bad. I doubt if the nylon rings on the piston were worn out.
