Camshaft gear removal?

I am in the middle of replacing the head gasket and want to replace the camshaft seals. How does the camshaft gear come off? Is it threaded and the small bolt on the side act as an alignment pin or does it have a keyway and press fit? If it is threaded, how do you keep the camshaft from turning to get enough torque to remove it?

Thanks for the help!

You have to remove the rotor and rotor holder from the front of the cam. Behind the rotor mount, there is a triple square bolt (cheesehead). Remove this while using a wrench on the large nut at the front of the cam. with the bolt removed, the front nut part and the cam pulley will pull straight off

Make sure you get a good tool, and be patient, making sure that the tool sits squarely in the bolt. Those stupid triple square bolts are way too easy to strip out, and that particular one is absolutely miserable to drill out if you do strip it.

I used a flywheel lock to hold the cam gear to loosen the cam bolt. (flywheel lock holds the crank gear; crank gear holds the belt; belt holds the cam gear) I didn't care about damaging the belt because it was going to be replaced anyway. Cam bolt came right out without any fuss. Just make sure the cam doesn't turn when you do this.

Tightening the bolt is a different story. You need to use a 32mm or 1-1/4" box end wrench (box end because of the required offset) to hold the dog while tightening that bolt. BTW, that bolt is a "stretch" bolt and should be replaced. Use medium strength thread locker (blue).
