Problems Installing Shift Rod
Hello again,
We are trying to join the shift rod to the shift levers (on top of the transmission) after replacing the clutch on my 1983 P944. When we removed the transmission, we didn't require a hammer and punch as stated in the repair manual. It came out with no problem, BUT installing it seems impossible! The manual states "Have an assistant push the shift rod back while you guide it into the shift lever on the transmission shift rod, making sure the dimple in the rod aligns with the hole in the shift receptacle". Easier said than done! We've greased it up, tried pushing it in by hand, and even tapped the shift rod with a hammer. The thing just won't slide in. Has any one else had this same problem? And if so, how did you remedy the situatioin? Stuck, yet again! Thanks for any suggestions, Mike |
Got It!!!
Well, it seems that at some point the top-inside of the shift rod gained a lip. We just Dremelled the lip right off and it slid right in. :D

Only problem I had was I shoved the shift rod too far forward trying to make sure it was out of the way. and when I wanted to slide it back it was stuck forward but it finally came loose and then I was able easily to slide it into place in the lever on the tranny.
