Fans
Why would both of my fans come on and stay on after i turn the key but not start it. They stay on even after i crank it and will not go off until the key is all the way off.

Is your AC turned on? If so, it forces both fans to run.

Someone may have tampered with the cooling system. My guess is that the car had been overheating, they didn't know what they were doing, found 12v with the ignition on and wired the fans direct. Snoop around the fan/radiator area and let us know what you find. Is the thermo fan switch on the radiator plugged in?
What year is your car?

The thermo switch on the radiator (passenger side, up high) can fail closed and keep the fans on. Test it for continuity. When mine went I could rap it with a screwdriver and it would work for a bit.
Hope this helps. Jon

Jon makes a good point, but I'd look on the left hand side of the car on the radiator for the thermo switch. All bets are off if you drive from the wrong side of the car.

I recently has a similar problem. Everything "had" been working fine but then, my fans stayed on even after I shut the car off - and I mean stayed on forever. I had to start pulling the fuses just to the get the fans to turn off.
It turned out to be the thremo fan switch - just below the upper raidiator hose on the driver side. It's a pain to get to and it takes a 29mm socket. The new switch was about $30 but it cured the whole problem. In addition, my car started running cooler after I changed out this switch so I think that before the switch broke, it wasn't turning "on" the fans early enough for proper cooling. Do a search on this subject, Razorback had a good point on how to test your switch. I can't remember the exact sequence but it involved unplugging the thermo switch and if the fans stayed on, it was the thermo switch and if the fans turned off, it was the relay (by the way, the relay was over $150) or visa-versa. Check www.clarks-garage.com for test proceedure. Definatly sounds like the temp switch. Usually not the relay, but could still be the relay.

Do the fans eventually go off without killing the battery?
This may be normal with the switch sending a signal to close the contacts in the relay until the temp drops. If you're running a low temp switch, they could stay on longer.
