Crossmember bolt
I was installing a Rennbay front sway bar bracket so I had to loosen one of the long front crossmember bolts just a smidge but it broke off. I have no idea how one would be able to fix this as it looks to be an impossible place to drill out. I am not sure how long these bolts are but it snapped about a quarter to half inch down the thread. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Use or buy an inspection mirror so you can see the other end of the bolt if possible. If there is enough thread showing to use vise grips to turn it out. Soak the bolt with Kroil in fact soak any bolt you are going to remove with Kroil first, and after it has set up TAP the bolt head to Wake Up the bolt with a hammer. If you have to drill the bolt DO NOT use the Spiral Easy Out. Buy a set of the Fluted Easy Outs as they can be removed if they break off. Remember if you buy Cheap expect it to break.

I recommend S'OK for a penetrating oil, green can, shamrock on it, probably won't find it on the shelf. Kroil is only slightly better than PB blaster, but a 50/50 mixture of ATF and acetone is by far the best.

Thanks for the tips for getting the bolt out but the big problem is that it broke off about 2-3 inches up into the shaft so there is no way to get to the broken part with vice grips. I think the only way to do this would be too remove the crossmember entirely? This does not look like an easy task.
I will find some of this oil for future use for sure. Last edited by Tiramisu; 02-07-2010 at 09:29 AM.. |
