A.C. questions
 

Hi Guys... yeah, it's been a while.
So..... I'm tired of thye sweltering heat in my 86 1/2 944 NA and was desoerately curious as to how to recharge the unit.... if it's even possible.......

The car can be easy recharged using r-134a must change fittings on the current lines to new ones and just have the system vacuumed and refilled and any ac repair shop or backyard Mechanic. Low side is on the compressor side.

Fittings, good advice PH. I'll order them from Pelican tonite.
How can I check my compressor? reason I am asking is because when I push the magic snowflake button, something turns on then turns off in a second or 2.

I don't know that one, thought I would answer your question being I just had mines done this Friday past. Just take it to a good A/C Mechanic my guy had all the required stuff and only charged me $150.00 bucks to get the whole system done.(New fittings for r-134a, check for leaks-vacuumed system and re-filled it and even tighten my ac belt). So take it to someone good you trust to do it. It should not cost more that $200.00 for what I had done. Hopefully you won't need any new pieces I was surprised I didn't being the car is still 20 years old and all. and still is not perfect I need a new ac clip for the support so for now I manually go under the dash to switch from hot to cold air.

I was told you should convert the dryer when changing to 134a. Luckily this was done on my car by the PO. The compressor may come on then switch off if the system is very low. Mine always blew coolish air, last year it was pretty much useless and early this year the compressor wouldnt turn on at all. I took it into an AC guy, he changed an O ring, a fitting and recharged it. It now work great, ice cold really.

You don't need a new drier unless the compressor blew chunks, or you are changing oils. Your fittings are behind the driver side headlight (High) and just beside the driverside strut tower (Low) on the 86. You can get the fittings at any auto parts store. To check the compressor, just jump the low pressure switch behind the driver side headlight, but don't run it that way for very long. Good to see you around again Frank.

Called 4 garages that do A.C. none of them wanted to go anywhere near my car :eek:
I'm clueless with All things A.C. in cars or I'd give it a shot. Maybe my inspection general mechanic can handle it after all he did a sweet job with the alternator last fall when that went kaput on me mid way to Baltimore for a cyclocross race :mad:
He hooked me up nicely and did a great job.
