Tranny Question
Hi guys. So I picked up yet another 89' 944 tonight. This one has a serious problem, was wondering if it is common.
Car starts fine...Put it in 'D' and you have to basically floor it to even creep across the ground. Reverse is worse than drive. I am thinking the fluid is just gone...Any thoughts? Also there appears to be an oil leak from around the passenger side radiator area dripping to the ground. How do you change the tranny fluid in these puppies? Can it be done at home? Is the tranny in this thing done?!?!?! Not that I care, since I'll be parting it out if anyone needs anything. Interior and paint are mint! |

Flex plate most likely gone. Many with automatics just replace the flex plate with a manual clutch disc and pressure plate since the flex plates are so expensive.
Read www.clarks-garage.com for changing the fluid out. Can be done at home and easy enough to do as well.

Mozencrath,
Where are you finding all of the 1989 944s with automatic????????? Are they rising out of parts yards??? I did see your "for sale" post and think you should rebuild your latest find instead of parting it out. 1989 Porsche 944 - Low Miles CHEAP -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok so I have a 1989 944 (non-S) with 39,000 miles on the odo. It has only accumulated 2,000 miles in the last 10 years. Car is in Central Long Island, NY. It is an automatic and is in excellent condition. All the usual options. Runs excellent. New battery. Other than a few minor cosmetic things, the car is mint. I purchased the car from a family member for a very low price, thus I am passing on the savings to the new buyer!! This is my second Porsche, so this one must go. Heres a chance to have a really nice 89' 944 with low miles for a low price. Contact me via my cell phone please with questions. Pics coming when it's not raining! Cell: 631-680-8934 Asking Price: $5500 Or Best Offer within next 7 days. Title is ready to be handed over. Will ship or pickup. Feel free to come drive it ANYTIME! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Last edited by Mozencrath; 06-15-2008 at 05:20 PM. Good luck with both. John_AZ |

check the fluid level, there is a plastic "cup" near the tranny with the fill \ level, it could be and sounds like its low on fluid or maybe burnt clutches. To tell if its the dampner jack up the rear (safely secure it) remove the inspection cover at the rear torwue tube before the tranny and check for the input shaft rotation. BTw does the tranny wine while creeping forward, another sign of low fluid\ burnt clutches. if thats the case replace the fluid and filter even after topping it off

Do you have any pictures of the car that's for sale? It sounds exactly what I've been looking for, price range too.
