My new Porsche!

Hey all, the 944 is not so good as a daily driver anymore. I went past that threshold of pure race car. However, I was able to pick up a more 'practical' driver. Its a 2005 Boxster 2.7L 6-speed. It is an amazingly refined driver and even gets better gas milage than the 944!.

And best yet they both fit in my garage so no need to get rid of the 944! (not that I ever would)

I want a 2.7 w/ 6 speed. For some reason the S models aren't as appealing (except that 6 sp.)

Hows the get-up-and-go compare to the 944?

how are you driving either car for the boxster to get better mileage? boxster at 1/4 throttle and 944 nailed to the floor trying to keep up?

The box dosen't feel super quick because it's so smooth. It is definatly faster when it builds speed on the highway. It has a great power band and low end torque. I don't have to shift to accelerate even in 6th. I have driven much faster cars including 951's but this is so comfortable I couldn't be happier (OK, a 997 GT2 would make me happier, but 200K happier?)

The 944 has the short 5th gear that came with the '88s (read 4K+ rpm @80mph). It also has shorter tires, a hot cam, and extra fuel. That adds up to low 20's at best. My best ever when the car was stock was 29mpg. The short 5th kills it. Today on my way to work with some traffic I got an even 30mpg. If I romp on it the milage drops dramatically.

Just as an interesting note, the brakes on the 944 feel much better. I have race pads with stainless lines and good fluid on the '44. I will be replacing the pads and fluid on the boxster and hopefully the pedal will firm up.

I have the short 5th and yes, it does kill the mileage. I average 25 on the hwy.
Brakes on the '44 are amazing, but I drove a 996 (should be the same brakes as the boxster) and was rather impressed.

Shift feel I found was slightly smoother but not much different. They using the same 'boxes over and over? lol.

996 and Boxster S have the same brakes, but the base Boxster has slightly smaller and non-cross drilled rotors. Still effective tho!
