balance belt idler clearance
Just got done installing a new set of belts with new rollers, tensioners etc. But I'm having a bit of trouble setting the BB idler clearance. I can easily set the 0.5 mm gap between the idler and the belt on the lower BS pulley. But the roller won't drop down to give me a 1.0 mm space to the long span of the belt. The idler is still riding on the BB, barely.
To complicate things more, I looked in the workshop manual and they say, ".....a clearance of 0.5 mm between drive belt and pulley when upper portion of drive belt is preloaded to 0 to 1 mm." From this I take it that the idler is suppose to touch the belt. I always thought that the idler doesn't touch the belt, unless it's slapping around. I'm a little confused now. Any thoughts? Suggestions? |

Knowing you have adjusted the BB belt correctly and that you have tightened the lower BB roller CW, you have options.
1. retension the BB again and in the area of + or - tension, go with the +. 2. If you feel you are perfect with the BB tension and your problem is the upper idler gap, press down on the roller with .5mm curved to fit in place and rotate the idler pully slightly until you sense the upper "apex" has been reached between the pully and BB belt. Tighten the idler pully and you are at the "0" position. This is what I do. No belt howl. John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |
