T-Stat Order
 

So last night when I finally got the thermostat out I forgot to pay close attention to where the metal shim goes. Does the shim go in first, then the t-stat with gasket on it and then the snap ring? Or does the t-stat/gasket go in first and then the shim then the snap ring?
I guess the real question is, does the snap ring ride on the t-stat/gasket or does the snap ring push on the shim?
I spent 30 minutes searching the forum and got both answers. Clark's and Haynes don't give the order either.

I will not try to mess with your head, but...
There are 2 types of T-stat seals-Thick 944-106-929.08 thickness 4.5mm AND thin 944-106-929.05 2.5mm. The updated WP is the heavy duty turbo style. The shim washer-900-234-160-00-M100 is used with the updated pump.

What matters most is the GROVE it all fits in.
The thermostat seal given with the thermostat-some come with a big "O" ring as well may not be what fits on your WP.

"The thermostat either uses a thin or thick seal ring, and MAY need a thick o-ring to sit under it. When you put the thermostat in, you should barely see the groove for the snap ring. If you can see the groove with a lot of extra space, you need the thicker seal ring. If you see the groove with a WHOLE lot of extra space, you need the large o-ring under it." From old post.

Okay, that is seriously messing with my head. Yes, I got the big round one at the parts store... that goes in the trash. I will reuse the slotted one that came off the old t-stat since I can't seem to find the right one with a fast lead time. But I still don't understand... does the thin shim (new style WP) go in first against the WP or does it go in last against the snap ring?

Thanks for the pic. I had a feeling that the snap ring did not ride directly on the t-stat. (I assume the blue in the diagram in the shim)
So if I hang on to the o-ring, what should I do with it? I was thinking I could make a nice slingshot with it :)

Yes, blue is the shim washer.

:) Put the spare o-ring in your wallet like the high school (middle school?) boys do.;):D

LOL... but that O-Ring would be too small :)
I got lucky this morning as NAPA had the correct o-ring that wraps around the t-stat. I also picked up another t-stat because the one I bought last week does not seem to open until 170F compared to the markings on the box that say 160F. Gotta love the boiling pot of water on your wife's stove test!!! Hopefully this one will test out a little better. I have heard that a lot of these things are mislabeled and they no longer stamp the temp on the t-stat itself. I guess it is cheaper to just not do that :(
