Is my timing belt idler pulley too small??

the engine is out of an '84 944, the idler pulley doesn't even touch the timing belt. will this be an issue? the water pump has been updated.

Thanks
Kevin

It looks like it is to me. Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of mine straight on like your picture, but it looks to be way too small. Where did you get the pulley at, or did it come that way?

Here's a link to a thread that has a picture of mine in it:
Timing Belt Tensioning

Scroll down about halfway to see the pictures with the idle pulley in it.

Hi! I see that you have got the new type of WP. That one needs a pulley of a 46 mm in diameter. The present one in picture is 32 mm. Strange that you or PO did not see this when changing WP and/or cam shaft belt. It is an easy change how-ever. Buy that new pulley and you will be fine

This is a great reference for timing/balance shaft belt specifications

Oh sorry! I mean that idler roller to the right of WP pulley should be 46 mm instead if 32 mm as it is now in picture

On later model there are 2 idle pulleys. The one you probably have is the one that is fitted near the tensioner (944 105 241 03) yellow arrow. You probably need (944 105 241 02) which I think is common to all, red arrow.

Mine looks the same as yours. After all these years and no problems, I intend to leave it that way. It doesn't serve much of a purpose unless your belt is crazy loose, and at that point, you have a larger issue than the roller.
