AC not cool

My 1984 944 AC is not blowing cool. It is blowing air and it is "clutching" which slows down the engine and proves the compressor is pumping. It seems obvious that it is a loss of coolant charge, but it was a very sudden change - worked fine last week - so I find that a bit hard to believe. Are there any other likely issues like fuses, controls/switches/sensors?

Thanks.

O rings, hoses, and the front seal on the compressor are likely targets. The clutch on the compressor may be shorting to ground too. Look for grimey build up at every fitting, and on the compressor.

There's a low Freon level sensor that once you hit that threshold it will cycle the compressor all the time until it kicks off completely which isn't usually too far behind. Try to top off with whatever refrigerant was used. More than likely though you have a slow leak at the compressor or in one of the connections. If you live in a very hot climate I don't think you will be happy with an R-134a conversion unless 90% of your driving is done at freeway speeds, especially on an early car.

I just did an R134 conversion and I can say its not too bad.. its nothing like my old fiero which was an icebox in 30 seconds and you needed to blast the heat to melt the icicles forming in your nose.... but the R134 after its been pumping for a min or 2 is pretty cold.... i just hope you don't have a black car like me because A/C is honestly a wast of time at that point haha.

Might want to check the high and low side pressures.

If the pressure is too low....meaning missing freon, then the compressor wont turn on. Same way with every compressor, even your home ac. It's designed that way so you dont burn out the compressor.

Great, I was told if the compressor does not turn on the clutch is bad...I am going to buy a recharge kit today and fill her up...or do you recommend bringing it to a shop ?

Unless you have the equipment (vacuum pump and gages) and know how to use them, take it in. You might avoid damage due to over fill, moisture and air will be removed from the system. Moisture and air can really mess things up. Leaks can be checked and the proper operation of the expansion can be verified. Things like the receiver drier or expansion might need to be replaced. They are not real expensive. When done the system may work!
