No start

I have an '84 944 that won't start. It will click, havent tried all the accesories, but the fan come on, running lights work, the oil and parking light come on. The battery light doesnt come on, the radio deosnt work and the headlights dont go up. I got a reading on my vole metre adn got 11.6DCv, but with the fans on I got 6.5DCv. I am going to put a new alternator in, and then jump the car. Thoughts? Thanks, Steve.

I've done this before. my problem was that the contacts on the posts weren't tight enough. but it could also be because of corrosion... "i think that's how you spell it"

charging the battery up wouldn't hurt either...

One thing that i ddint mention....... I droped off something at a local building. Thats the first time it didnt start. walked home, came back about an hour later, and it started, very little hesitation. I just thought, oh man a hot starting issue. Then I went to the gas station, not a mile down the road, turned her off and filled up. When I tried to start up, clicks again. I got a jump from the smoking girl filling up next to me. It started, I got home, turned her off, and tried to start her again, no go again.

Sounds like either a low/bad battery or a bad starter. Both of which can be tested for free at autozone.

Could be the wires to the starter/alternator as well, but I would check the two above first before you look at that or the alternator.

Its a new battery as of about 2 months ago or so. I was out there trying to get the alternator out, and cant get to the Alternator to AC compressor bolt. I loosened the belt tensioner, and the bottom AC compressor hole for the bolt broke. Happened with my 924S too, but the AC hoses werew broken off, so I had no trouble getting the Alt. to AC bolt off, but then I eventually got the AC delete beaket.

I wouldn't just assume that the battery is fine cause it's only a few months old. Just had one go bad on me and it was only weeks old.

I would still get it tested along with the starter. Then worry about the alternator.

OK, 11.6 volts. That's another way of saying dead (or nearly dead) battery.

I would say go ahead and charge it up. And, check out your charging system - could be the alternator isn't putting out like it should. Batteries don't tend to hold up well when they get discharged too far too often so a new battery may be in your future also.

When you took the voltage measurement was it across the battery terminals or the connectors? Could be a voltage drop between the battery posts and the cable connectors. Anyway, make sure you clean the connections and replace the connectors if they are questionable. You may also need to clean up the other end of the cables to make sure you have all good connections.

Good luck and let us know.

Took the alternator to autozone and they said that the it was dead. Luckily I have a new one from my 924Slaying around. Thanks for the help guys. Can I put on an air compressor from a 924S to an early 944? I thought you could, but it looks like it is a little different. The hose sopots on the 924S look like they are in different spots than the 944 compressor. Ill check the new parts section, Thanks again guys.
