Sputtering and hole in muffler

I am not sure if the two are related. The car ran great on Thursday for a spirited 30 minute drive. When I got home, i noticed a gold ball sized hole through the side of the muffler that was not there when I left.

This morning the car began sputtering/ stalling out at around 4000rpm. This contuinued with the rpm that this was happening at decreasing. It was doing this at about 2000 rpm before I parked tha car. The engine almost dies, rpms drop rapidly, and then the car recovers at a lower rpm.

Can the hole in the exhaust be causing this? Almost seems like a vacuum leak. Anyone experience this?

Thanks in advance,

Tim
