Painting your car in the garage! I had done this before on a couple of old trucks but I guess I wasn't as picky. Wanted to restore her to the original color - Sapphire Metallic- anyway she looks good going 60 and I'm going to get a good finish coat done professionally as soon as I can afford it. In the mean time, don't get to close to my 44!

Ha Ha... I tried that with a 914. Got so frustrated I ended up selling the car. Much respect for at least trying!!!

You painted the oil lamp as well...

Quite good given your distractions----garage by a cool lake and lots of toys.
Give it a good rub and buff it out.

Can't tell too much from the pictures. Looks a little dull. How many base and clear coats did you apply? Wet sand and buff yet?
Maybe your gun and/or mix of paint might have something to do with it?

I used a single stage paint, no clear coat , probably would've turned out better if I'd gone the 2 stage route. Also, I used a HVLP spray gun and it doesn't have a wide enough pattern so I got a lot of flat spots . The parts I took off ( mirrors, bumpers, etc. turned out pretty good, but the bigger areas ( especially the hood and sunroof ) are streaked and I just couldn't pull it off. I'm a little disappointed because I really spent a lot of time and elbow grease prepping the car and sanding off the cheapo paint job. I knew it was risky painting it this way, but I will get it right eventually, and I think the color looks good. John, that oil lamp came from the City of Seattle Water Dept. don't know exactly how old it is. Get out of that AZ heat and come up for a visit this summer. My mom is in Tucson, I'll wait until Nov. to go see her.

You actually painted that over gravel? I have seen good results on a wet slab of concrete though its not good for the environment.

Okay, that most likely explains it. Normally HVLP guns have a spray pattern adjustment on them, at least the ones I've used. I used to spray at about 28 to 30 psi.
You could re-do it by roughing up the paint with maybe 1000 or 800 grit and re-spraying with a good gun and 2 stage paint. Hey, at least you had the guts to do it.

You could wet sand with 3000 grit and polish it out.

I agree about using a base/clear system. It turns out looking so much nicer.

Well, now you've got me thinking.....I used DuPont Centari one stage acrylic enamel, put on about 3 coats.I have tried buffing and polishing but as I said, there are streaks of darker color ( it is a metallic ) and it's never going to look right. Is there a 2 stage base & clear coat that is compatible with the paint already on the car? Also I'm considering ordering this paint gun :

because it has a 12" fan pattern. I can wet sand the entire car and remask it for one more try, would still be a lot cheaper than paying a body shop. The nearest Maaco is in ABQ, LOL.! By the way, I painted the car in the garage , having made a makeshift paint booth out of plastic sheeting. I did wet down the concrete floor, why is that bad for the environment , legoland951?

I would never suggest sanding a metallic paint.
no matter what i did, it came out cloudy.. it basically destroys the metallic flake in the paint..
and i have a lot of experience in sanding and polishing.

as mentioned it will not sand and buff to any desirable result b/c it is metallic.

since it is fresh and without chips, scratches and the like this is a great time to really get it looking nice. I would spray a guide coat over what you have now and perfect any small problems usign a paint stick and 600 grit paper.

I would then opt for a nice global or PPG base clear setup and throw and extra coat on with the clear so you have years of buffing and polishing.

In the end you'll be much happier
