What is it about Garnett (SP?) Red?!?
In my 951 search, I am going to look at white and guards red examples later this week. The first car I looked at was a Garnett Red/white interior example that needed some work. I passed on that one.
Searching the PCA classifieds, I came across this beaut: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() So. This is EXACTLY what I am looking for. I think the only things I would think about changing are the floor mats. Car is <95K miles, perfect interior, no dash cracks, no major dents, dings, or chips. Everything is stock. Service history going back 13 years. No collisions. No leaks. AC blows cold. 16" Fuchs. Timing belts/waterpump/thermostat done less than 6K ago. The problems? First off, the seller is asking for a premium price, natch. This would be no problem whatsoever if it was in, say, RI or MA... but car is in North Carolina. Even if I could get a reputable PPI, what kind of trouble would I go through to get it home?!? There is also the problem of selling my car to afford a decent downpayment (I would probably finance through my bank). What would you do? I can get very clean guards red or alpine white car for $8000 or so... but this car is everything I want in a 951. What to do, what to do?

Hey CJ,
That is a SWEEEEEET Specimen! Having bought a fixer myself, I always encourage people to buy one that doesn't need fixing so you can enjoy more! Yeah you pay a little more up front but time saved and the enjoyment factor are fast equalizers! That being said, I am always amazed that I can do a search and ALWAYS find a sweet example that I would like to own. What I mean is, if the premium is too high on this one I guarantee there's one around the corner that you will drool over too! ![]() Don't forget, as soon as you buy it the value goes down but I bet that house you end up getting will go up from the day you buy it. By the way, happy to see you are giving your old one a chance at a second life. I hope that someone comes through! best, peter

Well, the cost of this one isn't THAT much higher than the one I passed on... and it looks to be in much, much better condition.
I asked the seller what he wants for a downpayment. This might decide whether or not I buy the car (I have no problem with financing, but I don't want to have to finance 10K+... but if I put down a big downpayment, I would probably need to find a buyer for my car fast)

Gorgeous! If I could turn my 83 NA into that, I probably would. Garnet is such a classy colour.

That's what I think I like about it; Garnet red/white was probably not a very popular color combo in 1987 (Guards red/black WAS), but it has aged so well. Very suave and subtle.
I think the burgundy floor mats would need to go, though.

I looked into shipping for this car. About $600 door-to-door; do you think it would be fair to ask the seller to drop the asking price about $500 in order to make a deal?

Try to get him to drop the price as much as he will. There is no such thing as fair here, it's all about what you are willing to pay versus what he is willing to take for it. You always ask...the worst he can do is say no. You can bet he is going to take as much of your money as he can..he wants to minimize his losses on the car just as you would want to do.
I know this is not really my business, but personally, I don't know if I would buy a car sight unseen. That may lead to disappointment with no recourse to get your money back. That's just my opinion. Buying a 20 year old car sight unseen is risky. Not really sure what your options are, but if you do this, make sure you have a huge number of pictures and look it over very carefully. I would just hate to see you disappointed. The car does look very nice though.

Good advice Razorback.
I agree, no matter how clean. I wouldn't buy sight unseen ether. I do love that color too... What is he asking?

Oh momma.
I can't tell exactly from the pictures but that red looks like it has some copper in it? Like a dark red/copper? A lighter more orange version of that would be called 'Can't Catch me Copper' around here. I had a Nissan/datsun truck that was copper... nowdays you only see that color on your occasional cavilier I think. GM color now. I like the white interior. Looks very classy.

CJ, there are things you can do to drive this car up, such as temporary insurance + tags, ect, though I would be wary about taking the car that far back home.

Just got an email from the seller. He accepted my offer, including a PPI. I may just buy this car. My 944 might be going on eBay tonight...

I don't know where in NC it is, but in the Charlotte area, I use PAS Automotive to work on my ca,r and they do PPI. There is also a shop that does a lot of work on race cars, and also does PPI's, Eurowerks.

Good luck if you go for it. It is a hell of a looker. If it runs like it looks then it is a good price, what you asked.
I'm currently saving money towards one... It makes all all fuzzy feeling seeing a car like that for sale...

Nice, very nice. If you indeed do buy, what's the first upgrade? Manual rack?

I don't think everything will be arranged by Sat... but thanks for the offer
![]() I am 99.9% sure I am making this deal. What makes me feel better about it is that the seller told me that he would rest easier if I could find a way to go to NC personally to complete the transaction, that way I could see and drive the car before handing over the cash. He will ship it if I really want, but he would prefer person-to-person. This makes me feel very comfortable dealing with him. He forwarded some more pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
