hot start

Did a search on this, didn't really find anything to match my specific problem.

When I first start my car in the morning, it fires strong and true immediately and runs very smoothly. After it warms up and I drive it a bit, however, if I stop and have to restart it after a short period of time it doesn't want to start... it kind of stumbles after several cranks. Once I get it started, it runs rough for about 10 sec and then smooths out completely. If I rev the engine, it might stumble for a second, but it helps expedite the smoothing-out of the engine.

The longer I let the car sit between driving (hence, the more chance it has to cool down), the easier it starts. For example, if I stop for gas, it stumbles quite a bit when I try to start it. If I have dinner somewhere and come back to the car after an hour or so, it takes a few cranks to start but then runs harshly for a few secs. If I work a shift (about 4 hrs), the car will start and run fine.

The closest thing that came up when I did a search suggested that my starter might be going? Is this plausable?

definately not a starter problem. Have you changed the fuel filter recently.

Fuel pressure regulator, maybe? I did a search yesterday on them, and it seems they can fail in several ways, giving a ton of different symptoms. Yours match some of what I found. Not sure, though. Can you recreate the problem and check your fuel pressure?

CJ -

Had the same issue (intermittently). Hot starts, real rough starting. Though I never had a non-start condition. Most noticable after running into the gas station for 2 minutes druing the summer in 90 degree weather. Mentioned it to my mechanic when I had my car there beginning of august for belt retentioning. Of course I couldn't duplicate it for him so it never got resolved. Been less of an issue since the weather has gotten cooler.

I'm looking for an answer too. I posted on it here & at clarks with little success.

Fuel filter was changed about 2 years ago... shouldn't be bad already, non?

Check valve - would this be leaking gasoline? I will definitely take a look at this!

Well, I haven't had a "no start" yet... I will check my fuel pressure asap. as this seems to be more of an annoyance than a real problem, I might just have my mechanic take a look at it really quick

depends how many miles/how many times you went into "r" part of the gage and sucked garbage into the tank.
btdt.

no, it leaks pressure in the fuel rail back into the tank.

I had a similar problem. The air intake j-boot was missing the hoze clamp at the AFM and therefore loose. Darndest thing - the clamp just disappeared!

This can also be caused by a leaking injector(s) (leaking gas into the cylinder anfter shutting of the engine). The extra gas helps on cold starts, but kinda floods out on warm starts.

sounds like your car is running rich for some reason or another. like robm said, the car needs extra fuel when the engine is cold, but after the engine is warm it's overkill. check the temperature sending unit in the head. there are two, one for the gauge and one for the fuel injection. if the car thinks the engine is cold it would keep dumping extra fuel into the engine.
