rubber clutch disc!
I bought a wonderful 87 944s from a fellow member this weekend. Clutch disc was going and I was able to drive it back to chattanooga. Dropped it all following Clarke's Garage and 8 hrs later (not bad at all) it's just about alltogether.

I just did my clutch a few months ago. It looked exactly like yours about 1/4 of the rubber gone, it was in limp home mode ( the tangs were hitting). And I was wondering what all that noise was from

Nice work! Brings back memories.
It's a good time to change the transaxle fluid once you get the gunk off. Clean and lightly oil the shift linkage. On top of the transaxle there is a small block that is the junction for the shift rods where they cross. If you develop shifter lever slop and the shift lever repair does not fix it all the way, it is this piece. Clean, oil and tighten. Be careful of the small shift rod bolts and don't over torque. well John......I'm in the middle of sorting a mid year 911 that was in pretty rough shape before I bought it. I still have a ways to go on that one. Money is pretty tight, so it's all going to that. But this car was such a good deal, I couldn't pass it up. I'll be selling my BMW, and using this great 944 as my DD.
This car was in such good shape, that for now, it will only be the clutch disc. I know it's probably frowned upon, but I'm not touching the seal, flywheel, or pressure plate.There was no scarring or scoring on the plates and nothing of the flywheel. Rear main seal is not leaking. TOB was pretty clean, tight, and spinning smoothly & freely. So, yeah, I definetly going the cheap route. Not touching anything else for now. I pretty cofident that the existing components should hold for many, many thousands of miles under conservative driving conditions. fingers crossed. Thanks for all the additional info. I'll be writing it to the list. And I'll make sure to change the transaxle fluid. I've got a jug of swepco in the basement. Straight forward procedure? Your repair sounds good. I did not change my rear seal last year on the "88. When I saw your pictures, I thought you had used my old pics
![]() Are you able to find a good price on a spring disc? I suggest you change the pilot and fork bearings. Check the slide tube for chaffing and hard to see cracks by base. Grease all with the synthetic HD grease. Look at the heater control valve on top of bell housing. Any white deposit leakage-replace ($20$) If you do a search, one of the pro wrenches, SoCal Driver, repacked his TO and did your approach often. John_AZ |

Boy, the rear main is pretty cheap to do, I'd have a hard time passing on that while it's out. I would also assume you are using new hardware on everything, the flywheel bolts are stretch bolts. I know it's a budget thing right now, but I just did mine and put a lightweight flywheel on and OMG it revs like a motorcycle now, very impressed! Trans fluild is just that, drain and fill untill comes out. Make sure to take the top 17mm fill bolt out first so you don't drain it and have a stuck fill bolt, just FYI.

That's what my clutch looked like. Given these cars are 20-25 years old, I suspect 95% of those clutches out there (in the car or in the landfill) look just like that too.

i have a 87 944S too, clutch was replaced in January, the rubber disk looked just like that.
