looking for almost new (slightly used) clutch friction disk
As the title suggest I am looking for a friction disk which is in almost new condition with little to no wear. I am trying to get my car back together on a tight budget and this is one of the high dollar items I might be able to save on.
The engine is a N/A 1985.5 Speedy:) |
never ever ever reuse a friction disk, unless you are using the same pressure plate and flywheel it was used with (even then it is a bad idea)
like brakes, clutch disks put deposits on your pressure plate and flywheel - like brakes, they bake in together - like brakes, you need to start with clean surfaces and new friction material - like brakes, if the surfaces are extremely smooth, and show no signs of blueing, you can generally get away without surfacing them, but the friction disk needs to be new find other ways to save money - that one is a bad idea |
I have the surfaces on the pressure plate and the flywheel stoned and clean. There is no evidence of abuse what so ever. As with using a slightly used friction disk I don't see the big problem. You still have to let them bed in just like brakes and even a "new" clutch would have to bed in the same.

With the amount of work involved in doing a clutch job, you don't want to go back in there again. Do it once the right way and forget about it for a long time and you will enjoy driving the car longer.

Speedy,
An option for a used disc: www.944Ecology.com George has great knowledge. OR http://dcauto.gotdns.com/illustration/index/27787388 There are a few more in the CA area as well. John_AZ 1988 924S + 1987 924S |
I measured the friction disk which came off the parts car and it was under the wear limit by 1.00 mm. The one in my '83 has 70,000 miles on it and I don't anticipate it being in reusable shape.
If I can find a clutch which is worn less than 10% for a fraction of the price I would be a happy man. |
Try ebay, I found a 3 piece Sachs kit for $400 I think, came with clutch disk, throwout bearing and pressure plate.

just buy my 944 for cheap and then use if for a perpetual parts car. It has a new clutch in it. I think my friction was around $250....i thought that was pretty good, but it's still pricey when compared to other cars.

^Just what Speedy needs.... another 944 to work on :)
