Questions about respray
Im currently in the process of stripping my 944 down for a respray. Ive got a few questions about the removal of a few components.
Firstly is the front badge panel removeable. Ive had a good look round it and I cant see any obvious way to remove it. If its not removeable how do I get the badge off so I can do a proper job of spraying it? Seems like Porsche went out of their way to make it hard to get at. How can i remove these strips running accross the door and slightly into the wing? Im guessing they might pry off but I would like some confirmation before I get at it. Also theres a strip that runs above the top of the doors. It can be seen in the pic below. Does that just pull off? Thanks for looking.. Tom

The rubber strip around the door is a long continuous piece. It is glued on. There are no clips.
There are many previous posts on removing the hood badge. Do not even think about removing your nose panel. Your 84 nose panel is riveted in place. A thin scraper is used to lift off. The new badges have retainers that just push in the existing holes. Don't have molding strips; although my first thought is using a hair-drier to warm up the glue (strip) with a scraper. Now i don't know if you plan or eliminating them or reusing them. I guess the amount of patience and care removing them becomes a factor. Personally I never liked the strips - it takes away from the lines of the car.

The strip above the top of the door is the rain gutter. It should just pull off, starting at the ends, but be careful when you do. It's easily bent and deformed. I'd be happy to leave it unless it comes easily.

Hey Aslet, thanks for the positive comment. I'm doing the respray myself/with my dads help. Im finding it quite enjoyable and its not esp difficult. This is the first car I have ever sprayed so I'm far from an expert, however it is good to have somone handy to give bits of advice should you need it and im sure the guys on this forum would be happy to do so.
The advice I feel I am qualified to give would be to spend your time getting the surfaces properly prepared before you even think about spraying. I wont go into details as there are plenty of guides around which would explain it much better than I could. If you have the time and are willing to put in the effort dont be put off, i'm doing it in a rather dusy garage without a great deal of space and so far the panels I have finished have come out great. You may even find you enjoy it as I have ![]() Make sure you are commited though, I have spent about 3/4 days in the garage now and I have just about finished the front end of the car. I have yet to strip the doors and the back of the car which will take a lot of work before I can begin spraying. Im sending my wheels of to be refurbished tommorow and I cant decide on a colour. I was thinking of black centres with maybe a gun metal outer. I like the look my dirty wheels give the car atm ![]()

I think all gun metal would be nice! I am not a fan of the black center wheels... They are already so small that have the back center and silver lip just makes them look smaller. I personally sprayed the center of my wheels silver and hand polished the outer lip to am almost mirror finish. I like that I still have the two different colors, but they are close enough that from far away it makes the wheel look uniform and larger... Just my opinion.

Im tempted by all gunmetal. That sounds nice. Did you move your side repeaters to the front bumper yourself? Mine are on the back of the wings. I was going to fill them over and get rid of them, however a friend tells me it will fail the MOT if I dont move them elsewhere (UK laws).

What you see in the photo is the standard North American location.
IMHO, the European look with a small repreater at the back of the wing just in front of the door is much more elegant.

I learned a trick from a body man that told be to use filament line for fishing to remove those side moldings. Get it started at one end while using a cutting action like a saw and move forward slowly. I had gloves on and wrapped the ends of the fish line around by fingers. Very similar to flossing your teeth. It worked like a charm.
