A/C and oil question

i've been thinking of removing the a/c in my 84 na but i'm not sure if it's worth it. i don't use it that much and i live in colorado springs. does it give you any noticeable power? any addition benefits??

also, i'm due for an oil change and i'm thinking of biting the bullet and using royal purple cuz they claim to increase power and help out the engine. any thoughts?? i've heard that older engines shouldn't use synthetic for one reason or another and i'm not sure.

any help would be great

Kevin

I don't think the A/C draws much power when you're not using it. Basically it would be like an idler pulley. So, don't remove it to save power. There are other reasons for removing it such as saving weight or you don't want to fix it and don't need it. I would have to recommend just leaving it alone.

Oil. I agree with you that your car and mine are too old to switch to synthetic but that's just an opinion. Don't use anything thinner than 10W-40, that's what I use but it's not hot here in Alaska. Most people use heavier oil than that.

Mobil One comes in a version called High Mileage, or something like that. Put in a heavier weight, like 50. Mobil doesn't get nearly as sluggish in the cold as a dino-oil, so you can leave it in through the winter-- maybe unless you park it outdoors overnight there in Col. Synthetic keeps its lubricity at higher temps than dino-oil, so what's not to like?

The issue for older motors is the protection of the valve train-- the lifter/valve stem interface, I think it is. Newer oils containless phosphorous, causing more wear. the designation 'for older engines" should mean that the additive ZDDP is in the oil, although it can be bought separately. Look at the can's label. Purple plus a ZDDP additive, added by you, would certainly be fine.

In principal, yes-- check around your local suppliers, incl. asking at the parts counter
