camshaft extension

I've diagnosed my top end noise. The camshaft extension which the rotor is attached to is loose. This is why it runs rough (my timing is not consistent as the rotor has lots of play now) and the rotor hitting the distributor cap is my noise. The rotor isn't loose, the large bolt-like extension is what has the play. Can this be tightened?

The part you are referring to is held in place by the cam bolt. There is a small insert extension that slides inside the large "nut looking" portion and is held in place by a small bolt.

My concern would be that the drive extension is "wobbling". That is a snug fit over the end of the cam shaft, so either the end of the cam is worn, or the drive extension has spread open! Either way, it sounds like the cam bolt worked it's way loose somehow.

Here's a link to my website that should give you a little more insight on how it's assembled: http://www.benms.com/944camseals.html

Hope it helps!

Your response, pictures and link are of tremendous help. Thanks very much. If there isn't any physical damamge I assume I can itghten things back up and run it (I am planning on belts, rollers, seals and water pump this winter, so that will get an even closer look then if I go that route). If there is damage/wear, new camshaft?

If it is temporary, I imagine you could get away with it until you do the front end. Usually anytime the cam bolt is removed, it needs to be replaced as it stretches when it is torqued down. If there is any damage to any of the components, drop a line to TNT25169, 944 ecology, or plyhammer they are always parting out cars and can probably help.

Many944s,

Thanks for the writeup. I looked at www.benms.com and saw additional information.
The lifter section in online technical information, helps a lot.

I had the same exact symptoms you are experiencing, and when I took the cover off of the front of the housing, everything forward of the cam gear fell in my hands right off the end of the camshaft. The bolt had broken, the cam gear had wobbled around, chewed up the cam gear key way, the key, and rounded out the key way on the camshaft. The only thing I can account for not having a serious problem, was having just enough of the key left to keep time. $125 later and I was back on the road. I bought a used, complete cam tower. I reused my lifters. You might be able to get away with installing a new bolt, I wasn't so lucky. Inspect the parts.

Back on the road in very limited duty prior to some significant downtime for preventative maintenance this winter. Thanks once again to the BBS for very prompt and accurate responses to my problems.
