85.5 944 Vibrations

Prelude: I bought my 944 when I was 17 (2002) for $2600 and have since spent probably less than $2000 on parts so I'm definitely not looking to keep this car working, unless it's going to be more cost effective than getting something else to drive around.

So I'm driving to work this morning shifting gently from 1st to 2nd at probably only 2500 RPM and then I hear some sort of snap pop. This is not the sound one wants to hear while heading to work. I was only about a mile away from the office, and the roads were only 25MPH so I figured what the hell might as well get there. Anyway after the noise I could feel vibration throughout the car which seemed to just get worse as the RPMs increased though I didn't go over 3200RPM after I started feeling the vibration. I couldn't really feel them at idle, but they became noticable around 2000RPM in any gear.

From what I've read it's probably the timing belt. Can someone possibily confirm that and make a guess as to how much that would cost to repair, or to even just get checked out? Like I said I really don't want to put any money into the car.

If it's going to be costly what does one think my options are for selling it as is? I'm guessing that there are probably $2000+ worth of good parts in there such as the struts, wheels, tires, seats, but I'm really not sure. I'm in the South Bay Area if anyone is interested

Thanks

It's not the timing belt, because the car will not run. But a good chance it's the balance shaft belt. If that is all it is consider yourself very lucky. Much cheaper to fix, But I would replace timing belt at the same time, it's probably not that far from failure.

Wow. How lucky can you get? Go out and buy a lottery ticket, Bryce.

Welcome to the board! Your balance shaft belt broke. The repair can be as expensive as you like, really. Change the timing belt NOW before it goes the same way.

probably the balance belt, as stated before. i'd plan on a new water pump and rollers, unless you have changed those in the last little while.
