I have all the steps finished for removing the engine...but I cannot get the steering shaft disconnected...any help would be much appreciated...
What clarks says to do...I can get anything to come off... Disconnect the steering gear shaft using a punch and hammer. Be careful not to damage the splines on the steering shaft

It usually is a PITA. I try to work it from underneath the car using a long screwdriver and a hammer tapping upwards. Spray it with WD-40 as well. You could also try to remove the shaft at the joint nearest the steering wheel. This joint tends to be less corroded.

I was an idiot and had dropped the rack before realizing the steering shaft was still connected. With lots of penetrating oil and a big flathead screwdrivers I wedged the coupler off the splines. After it got most of the way there I grabbed a big open ended wrench and used it like a pickle fork and popped it off. Because the rack was disconnected gravity assisted in this and it gave me some clearance to yank it better. Not sure if this is good for the rack but all seems well.

Just a hunch, but have you removed the bolt at the clamp completely rather than just loosen it? I found that out after trying for 30 minutes to get the connection to pop loose. The lower spline has a groove for the bolt. Once the bolt was removed the rack section nearly fell off with a slight tap of a hammer.

^+1. That bolt needs to come right out. Then drive a cold chisel or big screwdriver into the clamp to spread it open. A good beating always helps...
