Has anyone seen an intake port like this before?

In the process of rebuilding these heads, I came across one that was different then the others?!? In fact, I have NEVER come across a 944 head quite like it!

Just inside the intake port, there is a notch. They are not machined, they are cast into the head, as they have the regular rough cast finish. They appear to be lands where the injector would fire, but as I said of the 40 or so heads I have seen over the years, this is the only one I have seen like this. It has the standard part number (944.104.303.6R). Here are some pics, first of the oddball, then a typical head with the same part number:

Any ideas?

That is how my '83 head is. It has the notch as shown in your top picture. The head off the '85.5 does not have the notch.

That is very odd. Never seen that before, My 87 does not have that, Maybe on the early heads they did that to help in fuel atomization by making more air turbulence in the area of the injector spray
