will and late tranny fit in an early car?
Hi All,
I am posting for a friend. Will a late tranny fit in an early car? Are any mods required? Is the gearing different? My friend has an 83na. who's tranny is shifting hard. It was looked at by a few Porsche mechanics who were at the track, and they all agreed it was an internal problem. We are considering changing the tranny ourselves. I have moderate mechanical abilities. He has never had a blood blister or known the joy of scraping grease from under his nails. Any help is appreciated! I'm not sure about the interchangability, but if the only problem is that it's shifting hard, he might try changing the transaxle fluid first.
I have an 83 NA and it was hard to shift - particularly from 1st to 2nd. I changed the fluid to Redline MTL and since then, it's been a lot smoother. Theere's lots of different opinions on what lube to use. I think Redline MTL is one of the more popular ones. Here's the section from Clark's Garage Manual on changing the fluid: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-06.htm Make sure the upper filling plug can be removed before you drain the fluid out of the bottom plug!

Trying to work for parts!

Yes they will fit. gearing depends on year. turbo ones will make it slower, espcially in 5th gear.

late tranny will fit, be aware the 968 trans has slightly different mounting which requires some fabrication. This may also be true on some late S2's. Gearing on S2's, turbos and 968 trans are taller, especially 5th gear. the NA 84 would not have enough power to use this tall 5th gearing and would accelerate slow in 4th-5th.
924S trans' have shorter 5th gears and are a common sway for racing 944's as they better utilize 5th gear.

I believe I have done this swap both ways at various times (old tranny into new car and vice versa). IIRC it's not just the 968 trans that mounts differently; I recall that the main difference is any 85.5 and up 944 series car suspends the tranny from a central mount on a transverse steel beam. The early cars have a 924 style mounting system with ears on each side of the tranny.
But either system can be adapted to either style tranny - again, IIRC. Been out of 944s for a few years, and can't check with buddies from here in Iraq...YMMV, Al

A later transmission will not be a direct bolt up as the mounting bracket is up top in the middle instead of side to side like the early transaxle has.

Ive noticed my 86NA has no power in 5th unless its quite high in the rpm range.
Is there anyway to tell from the S/N if I have the correct trans axle for my car? Thanks. |
