Alternator issues-car starts, starter continues to run.

Car starts, battery light stays on but starter continues to run? This started to occur when I replaced the alternator last week. I know the help probably lies in these pages but I am lazy today and do not feel light doing an exhausting search after being exhausted from pulling my hair out.

My guess is that the solenoid contacts in the starter motor need replacing. I've been told it's not a difficult job...never done it myself. Just had the same issue with another vehicle and had an auto electrician do a rebuild on the starter motor.

Pull the starter off the car. Pull the solenoid off the starter. Use some fine (400 grit) wet/dry sandpaper to cleanup the solenoid plunger and cavity. Give plunger a shot of PB Blaster. Reassemble. If this doesn't work, you only invested an hour of time.

drball01,

You may have to take off the starter on your 1988 944 and at least spray a little lubricant by the starter gear. I would say that the solenoid needs a spray also. While doing this you should clean the BIG wire ends at the starter. The alternator output goes to the starter and then to battery. If you really want to go techno, here is more information about a basic VW (Porsche) starter.

About the hair loss, owning a 944 can make it happen.
