Door locks
My car has manual door locks and the driver side will only lock with they key..
is there a way to convert it to power door locks or to just remove the piece that keeps it from locking without the key?

Put in an aftermarket keyless entry, or have someone put one in for you.
Run less then $200 installed.

Call around to local radio installers.
it's a pretty simple job, except for getting the actuators lined up and set correctly. It's best left to someone with experience. Otherwise, get one off of evilbay.

You would also have to get the wiring, central control box & switch. Tried this route, not worth it. by the time your done you still dont have keyless entry, just electric locks.
There are no issues with putting actuators in an early car, but it's still better left up to the experts.

All new aftermarket alarms have keyless entry.
